In the United States, a partial shutdown began at midnight on Saturday — funding for dozens of federal agencies was halted, leading to a partial suspension of government operations.

This occurred despite the Senate having approved a package of bills hours earlier to fund key government agencies until the end of September. However, these documents still need to be reviewed by the House of Representatives, whose session is expected on Monday.
The shutdown was caused by the refusal of Democratic senators to support the bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security. This happened after federal agents shot two people in Minneapolis. Democrats insist that the bill be revised to include additional restrictions for agency employees.
On Friday, Democrats and Republicans finally reached a compromise: the Senate approved funding for most federal agencies, including the Pentagon, State Department, Treasury, and Department of Health, until the end of the fiscal year — September 30.
However, the Department of Homeland Security was excluded from the package: its funding will only be extended for two weeks to allow time to negotiate new rules for federal agents.
This is the second shutdown in the US this year. The previous one lasted from October 1 to November 14, 2025, and became the longest in the country's history. Approximately 1.4 million federal employees were affected then — many worked without pay or were sent on unpaid leave.
The reason for these actions were incidents in Minneapolis: on January 7, an immigration officer shot and killed a 37-year-old woman, and on January 24, a Customs and Border Protection agent killed a 37-year-old man. Following this, protests are taking place in Minneapolis and other US cities against President Donald Trump's harsh immigration policies and the actions of federal agents conducting raids against undocumented immigrants.
