18th-century synagogue building in Kobryn put up for sale

The building of one of the largest synagogues in Belarus, an 18th-century monument, has again been put up for sale in Kobryn. The building is being sold for the debts of the company "Zhylbudkomplekt," known for an unfinished residential project in Minsk. Now the object appeared on the "BelYurZabezpyachenne" platform, and its price has significantly decreased, writes "Smartpress".

The synagogue is located at Pervomayskaya Street, 40. The building area is over a thousand square meters. It is a stone religious building with an attic and extensions. The building has not been used for a long time and is in a dilapidated state, but it has the status of a historical and cultural heritage.

The synagogue was built in the 18th century when the Jewish community constituted a significant part of Kobryn's population. Before the war, more than seven synagogues operated in the city, but after World War II, only this one survived. During the German occupation, the building became the center of the ghetto, where Jews from the surrounding area were driven.

After the war, the synagogue ceased to be used for religious purposes: valuables were removed, and the premises were adapted for economic needs. In various years, production facilities were located here, and in the 1980s, a workshop for the production of beer and soft drinks of the Kobryn Canning Plant operated in the building. Since the 1990s, the building began to gradually deteriorate.

Earlier, plans for the synagogue's restoration were discussed — it was envisioned to create a cultural center for Western Belarusian Jewry, a museum of history and ethnography, as well as an active synagogue here, but these ideas were never realized.

The reason for the sale is the financial problems of the former owner. The company "Zhylbudkomplekt" failed to fulfill its obligations to hundreds of shareholders in Minsk, after which its executives were convicted, and its property was put up for auction.

Together with the building, the new owner will receive a land plot of 57 ares, which can only be used for religious (cult) purposes. Electronic bidding is scheduled for February 3, with an initial price of 122 thousand rubles — significantly less than last year, when the synagogue was attempted to be sold for 600 thousand.
