A landslide collapsed several mines in a large deposit in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, killing at least 200 people, writes The Associated Press.
The landslide occurred in mines controlled by the local M23 armed group, and heavy rains were named as its official cause.
A former miner who worked at the site told AP that landslides occurred repeatedly because the tunnels in the mines were dug manually and were not properly maintained.
Eastern Congo has been experiencing crises for decades. Years of conflict in the country have led to one of the world's largest humanitarian crises, displacing more than 7 million people from their homes.
Since December 2025, over 300,000 residents of the country have left their homes.
The mine where the landslide occurred is located in a mineral-rich region of the country, which was seized by the Rwandan-backed M23 group in May 2024.
