Lithuania to appeal to the USA over the latest weather balloon incident
After the operation of Vilnius Airport was disrupted on Tuesday evening due to weather balloons from Belarus, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys stated that a note of protest is being prepared against official Minsk, and all relevant information about the attack will be handed over to allies.
Among these partners are the United States of America, with whom Lithuania continues to maintain close ties, reports LRT.
"We will transfer all information about the actions being carried out against us to the American side as well. Together we will look not only for how to describe all this, but also for very concrete solutions. We have constant contacts with the USA. We have a large representation in Washington and maintain communication not only through it. We transmit information, observations, constant communication is ongoing," stressed the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
According to the head of Lithuanian diplomacy, all relevant information about the actions of Alexander Lukashenka's regime has been transmitted to partners across the Atlantic for some time, and this process has not stopped.
Answering the question of whether the latest influx of contraband balloons can be considered an act by the Belarusian authorities against Lithuania, the minister noted that he wants to wait for more information and did not rule out the need to consider different versions.
"There are various possible explanations, but we should not jump to conclusions," said Budrys.
According to Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center, by Wednesday morning, eight balloons with smuggled cigarettes, several remnants of such balloons, and four arrested individuals had been identified.
It is estimated that the imposed restrictions at the airport affected more than 1,700 passengers.
