According to eyewitness reports, a shark attacked the boy while he was swimming with friends.
Despite the victim being quickly pulled ashore and given first aid, the injuries proved to be incompatible with life. The teenager was brought to Rocha Dantas Hospital already without signs of life. Doctors stated that massive blood loss was the cause of death.
The area where the incident occurred is considered a high-risk zone: since 1992, 82 shark attacks have been recorded there, 27 of which resulted in fatalities.
