Trump Plans to Expand Peace Council's Work Globally

Donald Trump plans to significantly expand the powers of the so-called Peace Council, which was originally proposed to be created for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. Now, according to American officials, this body is intended to become global and effectively replace the UN Security Council. Trump intends to announce this at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the most representative US delegation in the event's history is expected, writes Axios, citing a high-ranking American official.

It is planned that on Thursday, the official announcement of the Peace Council and the signing of its charter will take place. According to the document, Trump himself will become the head of the new structure, and only he will have the right to veto all decisions. This format caused dissatisfaction in Europe, where it is emphasized that during previous agreements, including the meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh after the cessation of the war in Gaza, there was no mention of such a body.

As Trump's advisors note, his confidence in power politics strengthened after the successful operation against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. At the same time, the White House claims that the president is not seeking world domination: his main priority remains the interests of the United States, which, in his opinion, still remains the leading power in the world.

The Peace Council charter speaks of creating a flexible and effective international mechanism for conflict resolution, without mentioning the UN or Gaza. The document calls for forming a coalition of countries ready for practical and quick actions, and criticizes existing approaches which, according to the authors, only perpetuate the crisis rather than resolve it.

A number of countries have already refused to join the initiative. France stated that it would not participate in the Council, where permanent members are required to contribute one billion dollars each. According to media reports, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Canada also do not plan to join and will ignore the signing ceremony. Israel also reacted negatively to the idea. At the same time, Argentina, Morocco, Qatar, and Indonesia expressed their readiness to participate. In total, Trump invited 58 heads of state to the Council.

Amidst disputes between the US and Europe over Greenland and the Peace Council initiative, the Ukrainian topic at the Davos Forum will likely recede into the background. The Ukrainian side reported that the signing of the plan for Ukraine's recovery and economic development has been postponed. Washington explains this by saying that the document still requires refinement, and significant breakthroughs are not expected yet, although meetings between Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders are still planned.

According to Ukrainian officials, European delegations had to revise their position at the last moment and prepare to discuss not Ukraine, but issues related to Greenland.
